Iowa State Fair has 53 new foods to try in 2022

Sweet, salty, savory, strange, tasty, on-a-stick, on a plate, in a bowl, there are 53 New Foods at the 2022 Iowa State Fair. With only 22 days until the Fair, you can start planning what foods you will try this year along with all the great contests and entertainment.

The 2022 New Foods are listed below, along with the new food contest entries and the top three finalists. Fairgoers can vote on the top three foods to officially name the top new food for the 2022 Iowa State Fair.

  • “OMG” Chicken Sandwich: Chicken City

“OMG” this chicken sandwich is a chicken breast that is lightly battered and covered in sugar coated corn flakes fried to golden brown and served on a glazed doughnut. As if it wasn’t enough, it’s topped with bacon and drizzled with syrup. It’s an “OMG” combination of sweet and savory.

  • Pork Picnic in a Cup: Iowa Pork Tent

The Pork Picnic in a Cup is a twist on the classic summer picnic. A cup filled with layers of BBQ pulled pork, baked beans, creamy coleslaw and a drizzle of BBQ sauce, garnished with brown sugar pork belly. An amazing way to enjoy good summer eats, feast on great Iowa pork and Find Your Fun at the Fair.

  • The Finisher: The Rib Shack

Not your average potato, it’s an extra-large russet potato, layered with chopped brisket, smoked pulled pork and The Rib Shack’s famous Bacon Brisket Mac and Cheese. Follow that up with a generous amount of gourmet BBQ sour cream and signature garlic rub butter. This is a meal that tastes like the Fair in one dish.

The top 3 new Fair foods will compete for the coveted 2022 Iowa State Fair People’s Choice Best New Food. Fairgoers can sample the top three finalists and cast their vote starting Thursday, August 11 through Monday, August 15 at midnight. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, August 17 during the Fair.

Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend Fast Facts

WHAT:
Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend will be hosted July 22-24 at Iowa Speedway.  The race weekend will feature the only doubleheader on the 2022 NTT INDYCAR SERIES schedule – the HyVeeDeals.com 250 presented by DoorDash on Saturday and the Hy-Vee Salute To Farmers 300 presented by Google on Sunday. Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires will also compete in a single race on Saturday, July 23, and the event is collectively known as Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend.

Friday, July 22-Sunday, July 24, 2022 

WHERE:
Iowa Speedway, known as the “Fastest Short Track on the Planet” 

TRACK LENGTH:
7/8 of a mile 

RACE HISTORY:
There have been 15 NTT INDYCAR SERIES races hosted at Iowa Speedway, with the last events contested during a doubleheader weekend in 2020.  In the opening NTT INDYCAR SERIES race of the 2020 weekend, driver Simon Pagenaud started in last place and worked his way through the field to earn the memorable victory.  In the second race of the weekend, Josef Newgarden started from the pole and led 214 of 250 laps to sweep the weekend for Team Penske. It also marked Newgarden’s third career NTT INDYCAR SERIES victory at Iowa Speedway to tie Ryan Hunter-Reay for the most series wins at the short oval.  Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires has hosted 11 races at Iowa Speedway, with the last event taking place in 2018.  Current NTT INDYCAR SERIES star driver, Pato O’Ward, won the Indy Lights pole and led all 100 laps to bring home the victory in the last series race in Iowa.

FOOD TRUCKS:
Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend will feature nearly 50 food trucks throughout Iowa Speedway. Fans are encouraged to help decide the winner of the weekend-long Food Truck Challenge. Through a QR code on site, fans can vote for their favorite truck and the top three eligible entrants with the most votes will earn cash prizes and the honor of being named to the Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend Food Truck Challenge podium.  

CONCERT LINEUP:

The Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend features an amazing music lineup. Three-time Grammy award-winning country music superstar Tim McGraw will perform prior to the start of the Hy-VeeDeals.com 250 presented by DoorDash race on Saturday, July 23. Following Saturday’s race, Billboard record-holding country music duo Florida Georgia Line will take to the stage at Iowa Speedway. On Sunday, July 24, three-time Grammy award winner and multi-platinum artist Gwen Stefani will perform prior to the start of the Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 presented by Google race. A performance by nine-time Grammy-nominated country music artist Blake Shelton will provide a memorable ending to the turbocharged weekend following Sunday’s race. Both pre- and post-race concerts are included with Saturday and Sunday Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend tickets as each artist will perform on stage trackside, in front of the main grandstands at Iowa Speedway.  

FREE FAMILY FRIDAY:
All fans will have the opportunity to take part in the Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend for free during FREE Family Friday.  Gates will open at 2:00 pm CT and no tickets will be required to enter the venue on Free Family Friday. All grandstand seating areas will be first-come, first-served general admission viewing throughout the course of the day for both NTT INDYCAR SERIES and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires practice. At approximately 5:30 pm, the infield will be opened up to all, allowing fans the chance to take a track walk on the racing surface and both INDYCAR and Indy Lights will host an autograph session from 6pm-7pm at the team garages in the infield. 

MORE FAN ACTIVITIES:

Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend will include many options for fans, in addition to the world-class racing on track. Adding to the entertainment of the premier concerts, the Food Truck Challenge and the excitement of Free Family Friday, the three-day festival will include more family-friendly activities. Saturday, July 23rd is “Kids’ Day” with more than 1,000 youth from central Iowa-area youth programs and school districts attending the day’s activities. Located in the Iowa Speedway Midway, younger fans can visit the Kids Zone, which includes the Hy-Vee KidsFit activities area, special appearances by celebrities, the Red Bull gaming truck, Iowa State University STEM Lab and other fun activations. Farmers will be honored and recognized on Sunday, July 24 with more than 1,000 people from the agricultural community attending the final day of the weekend as guests of Hy-Vee. Fans can also see a unique collection of vintage tractors displayed on the Iowa Speedway concourse during the weekend. 

CAMPING
Camping is a tradition at Iowa Speedway and both the Turn 3 Terrace (RV Hill) and main campground areas will be popular spots throughout Hy-Vee INDYCAR Race Weekend. Hy-Vee is also providing some unique services and options for campers and all fans in attendance at Iowa Speedway. Featuring basic grocery items and camping/outdoor needs, Hy-Vee Mini Markets will be conveniently located on both RV Hill and in the main campground areas at Iowa Speedway. All ticketholders will be able to visit the Mini Market in the main campground while access to the RV Hill Mini Market will be limited to those with Turn 3 Terrace Camping weekend passes. Hy-Vee’s convenient Aisles Online delivery service will also be available as fans can order items online to be delivered to the Mini Market locations at Iowa Speedway.
