As sub-zero temperatures grip the nation and an increased demand for energy is prominent, possible rolling power outages have been on the table. Power companies, like MidAmerican and Corn Belt Power Cooperative, are encouraging Iowans to conserve energy, specifically Natural Gas. It has been reported that companies calling for rolling outages are part of what is called the “Southwest Power Pool” which covers 14 states, including Iowa.

Though Corn Belt Power Cooperative has started rolling blackouts within the state, they don’t have anymore outages planned at this time because they have enough energy to cover demand. They are still requesting customers conserve energy where possible.

MidAmerican Energy’s natural gas supply has been hurt due to frozen gas wells, leading to their request for energy conservation as well.

How To Conserve Natural Gas

• Seal leaks around windows or doors
• Use the cold water setting on your washer
• Make sure your furnace filter is clean
• Turn down your thermostat a few degrees
• If you smell natural gas, leave the area immediately. From another location at a safe distance, call your energy provider, and then dial 911.

What To Do If You Are In The Middle Of A Power Outage

• Stay Home – The CDC states that staying indoors is best during a power outage
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed
• Make sure you have essentials – Food/water, flashlight and extra batteries, first aid kit, extra medicine
• Stay Warm by layering up – Hat, gloves, and extra layers can be crucial in extreme cold
• Be careful of carbon monoxide – If you’re using a generator be sure to keep it outside at least 20 feet away from your home.
